If you were born anytime before 1985, you probably remember the old REM song about the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine... I can't seem to get the chorus out of my head. Well, let's face it, no-one could possibly understand anything but the chorus back in the day anyway. Why would I have such a silly 80's song in my head? Well...All day long my students have been asking me if the world is going to end on December 21st.
Yes, the end of the Mayan calander has finally arrived. The completion of some mysterious 5,125 year cycle. The planets will be in some rare freaky alignment. OHHHH NOOOO! Bolt the doors, hide the pets, dive under your beds folks, we are all doooomed.
I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes, "Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see" from Benjamin Franklin. I feel like some of my kids know that this whole "end of the world" thing is just a bunch of nonesense, but I also feel that some of them are actually worried and not sure what is going to happen.
As an adult who has been around a fairly long time, I have some perspective on the situation. Kids, ask your parents about Y2K and the simultaneous crash of ALL computers and electronic gadgets that was supposed to throw civilization into the dark ages. Or the June 1974 cover/feature story of Time Magazine titled Another Ice Age where the article scared a generation into believing the world was in a massive cooling trend and the next ice age was coming. Or how about how we were all supposed to get sick and die of the swine flu a couple of winters ago. Mad cow. Avian flu. And the list goes on and on and on....
This is just another ridiculous apocalypse prediction, and not even a very good one at that, that will pass us by without even a rumble. So DO NOT worry about this one kids. Listen to Ben, he was VERY smart! I leave you with the classic 1987 REM song (live performance) that I think will be stuck in my head at least till Christmas. Can YOU understand the words?
Is the chorus stuck in your head now? Have a great weekend everyone. We're almost at Christmas break!
