~ Hey Kids! (And Parents!) Do you like to draw or color pictures? Color us a picture for an upcoming feature on our website, our new Art Wall! We're inviting our kid readers (through their parents) to draw or color a picture of your favorite character or scene from The Gryphon Chronicles and email us a jpeg to AuthorEGFoley@aol.com. It's best if parents send these on behalf of their kids. Just send it as an attachment. Tell us what your picture is, along with the artist's first name, last initial, and age or school grade. Hometown, optional. Kids are so creative and we think it's great when they engage their own imagination in response to stories they read.

Big Trouble...
Reunited with his aristocratic magical relatives, and finally getting used to his own supernatural powers, orphaned ex-pickpocket Jake Everton, the young Lord Griffon, travels on his first-ever holiday to beautiful Norway. There, at an amazing (steampunk!) Invention Convention, his cousin Archie, the boy genius, plans to unveil his marvelous new flying machine to the scientific world.

But legends of the Viking Age die hard in Scandinavia. Danger strikes as famous Victorian geniuses start mysteriously disappearing from the Convention. When Archie vanishes, too, Jake races to the rescue. With the help of his trusty pet Gryphon, he tracks the kidnapper to his lair - only to come face-to-face with an angry Norse giant! Thus Jake's second quest in the Gryphon Chronicles begins...

From the whimsical steampunk oddities of the "Invention Convention" to wondrous worlds of Norse mythology, join Jake and his friends on a giant-sized adventure that's as much fun for grownups as it is for kids!

"And let that be a lesson to you!"
Here you shall find explications, pronunciations, and translations of Victorian slang. Ignorance of the laws (of grammar) is no excuse.

Constable: a policeman.

Glocky or glock-witted: crazy. (adj)

Hansom cabs - one-horse carriages that served as taxi cabs in Victorian England.

Knuckler: a pickpocket, also known as a "five finger artist."

Milling match: a fight. This slang term refers to old-time grinding mills where grains got pounded into flour. A metaphor for pounding someone into dust!

Mumper: a beggar or someone who fakes illness to get out of working.

Rookery: a bad neighborhood.

The Strand: an important, very old road in London that follows the River Thames through the city.

Toff: a rich person.

Writer's Corner

Tip #1 for Young Writers. If you want to write a story, make sure to start your character off with a GOAL that he or she desperately needs to accomplish - a danger to face or an alarming problem to solve. If the character is not propelled into action by a goal, then the story will flounder and the pacing will drag. So give them a kick in the pants to get them moving! Remember, in fiction, problems are good. They make for juicy, exciting tales. In life, not so much...!

ANCIENT YEW TREES OF ENGLAND & EUROPE
In THE LOST HEIR, Jake learns about the noble Order of the Yew Tree. Here's what a real, ancient Yew Tree looks like! These trees are protected in Europe; this one stands near a church in France. It's a couple thousand years old and so large that they built a tiny chapel inside it. I'm pretty sure fairies live in the branches. :)
